For many years my interest in challenging traditional ways of viewing the landscape has led me to photograph a wide variety of environments. Initially, my interest in historical sites guided my choice of locations. More recently, I have begun to explore diverse places where I have a more personal
connection.
I continue to be drawn to a variety of elements that create what can appear to be an elusive barrier between the subject and myself. In several of the new photographs, the eye is engaged in a subtle shift of focus that leads us, spontaneously, to see the fragments as well as the entirety of the vista. The overall sense of quietude is disturbed by a subtle, yet present, tension.
The most recent C-prints represent a shift towards the use of more vibrant color, and away from a more tonal palette that was reminiscent of my earlier black and white work.
I continue to work with traditional photographic materials, while adding digital cameras to my toolbox. The output now includes C-Prints, Gelatin Silver Prints, Archival inkjets and hand-made books. The exploration of digital manipulation provides me additional ways to not only display the images but to realize their potential as landscapes.
